BMKG Lightning and Atmospheric Researcher, Deni Septiadi, the Arcus cloud phenomenon is dangerous for global aviation. He appealed to the plane to avoid the cloud so as not to run into problems.

"We need to avoid these clouds, especially for the purposes of taking off and landing for airplanes," Deni told CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (11/8).

Deni said planes crashing into the Arcus cloud when landing or taking off could experience strong turbulence. In fact, he said the plane was struck by lightning.

This is because he said the Arcus cloud, which is a type of Cumuliform cloud, has the characteristics of fast growth, and can produce tornadoes, lightning, extreme rain, and hail.

"Typically Cumuliform is a cloud with fast growth," he said. 

Even though it is dangerous, Deni said that Boeing or Airbus aircraft do not use metal, but composite and have a static discharge installed on the muzzle, wings and tail.

"But just stay alert, especially because there is something called CG cloud 2 ground (cloud lightning to the ground), IC Intra cloud (inside the cloud), CC cloud 2 cloud (cloud to cloud). CG coverage radius can be from the top of the cloud to the cloud. surface (about 10 km). So you still have to be vigilant, "said Deni.

Deni explained that the Arcus cloud was at a low altitude about 2 kilometers from the mainland. The cloud, he said, is a type of accessory from the Cumulonimbus (Cb) cloud.

Deni stated that the difference between the Arcus cloud and Cumulonimbus cloud lies in its shape. Arcus clouds grow wide and only about 2 km in height. Meanwhile, Cumulonimbus is a dense and towering vertical cloud.

Moreover, Deni also conveyed that Arcus cloud consists of two types, namely the cloud shelf which is attached to the Cumulonimbus cloud and the cloud roll which is separated from the storm cloud. What happened in Aceh, he said, was the Arcus cloud, a shelf cloud type.
